As coronavirus cases continue to rise in India and the worst-hit state Maharashtra, authorities in Pune seem to be cracking down on people who think roaming around in public places without masks amid a global pandemic is 'not a big deal'.
Pune Police along with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have fined nearly 28,000 people within a week for not wearing masks and violating Covid-19 guidelines.
Pune Police DCP Bacchan Singh issued the data in a statement on Saturday which said a total of 27,989 people violators were caught in public places between September 2 and September 10. Each violator was fined Rs 500 for not wearing mask.
A total of Rs 13,994,500 was collected from people who chose not to wear masks and put others and themselves at risk of getting infected with the deadly virus.
District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh shared that around Rs 1.5 crore has been collected from mask violators in rural part of Pune district.
