Operation theatre, beds: Osmania hospital doctors call off strike after assurances
- Sep 13, 2020
The junior doctors at the Osmania General Hospital in Telangana's Hyderabad called off their strike after the hospital superintendent's assurances that their demands will be met. A letter signed by the hospital superintendent states: "...the following arrangements have been made temporarily to perform elective surgeries until operation theatre facilities are made in GHMC Shelter Home."
The arrangements listed in the letter are:
(i) The Neuro-Surgery OT will provide one major operation theatre room for elective orthopedics cases
(ii) The plastic surgery OT will give to three operation tables for elective General Surgery cases
(iii) The General Surgery Post Operative Ward in the QQDC ward will have female cardiology ward in addition to present post operative ward in male cardiology ward, making a bed strength of 50 beds
(iv) Meanwhile, general wards for both male and female surgeries will be allocated in accordance with facilities available
The operations of the Osmania General Hospital, one of the biggest non-Covid facility in Hyderabad, saw disruption on Tuesday after junior doctors said they will boycott OPD, elective surgeries and ward duties indefinitely until their demands are met.
The junior doctors at the hospital had been protesting the absence of basic healthcare facilities at the hospital.
Earlier in the day, the junior doctors had threatened to boycott emergency duties from Saturday if the old building is not reopened or a temporary facility for surgeries is not set up.
The heritage building, which houses close to 350 in-patients, 2 operation theatres and 8 wards, was vacated and locked after rainwater entered the premises of the Osmania hospital following a sewage pipe blockage in July.
The junior doctors say they are facing difficulties in performing surgeries due to a lack of healthcare facilities.
In a strike notice, the doctors had said, "Our issue regarding operation theatres, wards, fully equipped ASC and post-operative wards have still not been solved in spite of repeated representations" and said they would boycott emergency duties if their demands are not met.
The doctors have now called off their strike.
