India's coronavirus caseload sprinted past the 46 lakh and the death toll climbed to 77,472 with a record spike of 97,570 infections and 1,201 fatalities in a span of 24 hours. The recoveries have crossed 36 lakh on Saturday, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

With the fresh spike in the single-day coronavirus cases, India's Covid-19 tally has climbed to 46,59,985. India has currently 9,58,316 active cases, according to the health ministry.

India had tested 10,91,251 samples to detect coronavirus cases in the country. So far, the country has tested 5,51,89,226 samples, according to the ICMR.

India had recorded 96,551 infections and 1,209 fatalities in a day. The country had recorded over 95,000 cases on Wednesday and Thursday.

India's coronavirus tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and it went past 40 lakh on September 5.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Health said that there has been an unprecedented surge in the coronavirus recoveries in India. "There is more than 100 per cent increase in patients recovered and discharged in the past 29 days," the health ministry said.

"More than 3/4 of total cases [more than 36 lakhs] coronavirus patients have recovered and discharged. Active Cases [less than 10.5 lakhs] is only a small proportion [less than 1/4] of total cases," the Ministry of Health said.

"The Centre-led coronavirus management strategies have focused on early detection through widespread, easy & aggressive testing; standardised quality & effective treatment in hospitals and supervised home/facility isolation and reducing mortality," it said.
